Epidural Steroid Injections (ESI)

What Is an Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI)?

An epidural injection is a common outpatient procedure used to help relieve pain in the back, neck, arms, or legs. During the injection, your provider delivers medication (typically a combination of a local anesthetic and a steroid) into the epidural space, which surrounds the spinal cord. This treatment works by reducing inflammation or interrupting the pain signals that travel from your spine to your brain.

Conditions Treated with Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural injections are often recommended for patients with:

  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Radiculopathy (nerve irritation that causes pain to radiate into the limbs)
  • Degenerative disc disease (breakdown of the discs between vertebrae)
  • Facet joint arthritis (inflammation in the joints of the spine)
  • Nerve compression or pinched nerves

What to Expect During the Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, a staff member will go over what to expect and answer any questions you have. You’ll be asked to sign a consent form before getting started.

In the treatment room, you’ll lie on a table and the area receiving the injection will be cleaned and sterilized. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the skin and reduce discomfort. Your doctor will use imaging guidance, such as a fluoroscope (a type of X-ray), to carefully place the needle and deliver the medication into the epidural space.

Some patients may experience temporary discomfort during the injection. If you feel pain at any point, let your provider know so they can adjust as needed. The entire procedure usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Once it’s done, the needle is removed and a bandage is applied. Afterward, you’ll rest in a recovery area before heading home. Be sure to bring someone with you to drive.

Recovery and Pain Relief

It’s normal to feel a little soreness at the injection site for up to 24 hours. You can use ice, rest, or over-the-counter pain relievers to help ease any discomfort. If you have questions during your recovery, contact your provider.

The pain relief from epidural steroid injections typically begins within two or three days. Many patients report improvement in their symptoms, although results can vary. For some, the relief may last for several months. If the injections are effective, the treatment can be repeated as needed to help manage symptoms over time.

Is an Epidural Injection Right for You?

If you’re struggling with chronic neck or back pain, an epidural steroid injection might help. This non-surgical option can reduce inflammation around the spinal nerves and provide lasting relief for conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and sciatica. It’s a safe, minimally invasive procedure with a relatively quick recovery time.
