Kyphoplasty

What Is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a nonsurgical procedure used to treat compression fractures in the vertebrae, the bones of the spine. Similar to vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty involves injecting medical-grade bone cement into the fractured bone to stabilize it and prevent further collapse. Acting like an internal cast, the cement helps reduce pain by supporting the bone and allowing it to heal properly.

Kyphoplasty vs Vertebroplasty

Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are similar procedures, but with one important difference. During kyphoplasty, a small balloon is inserted through a hollow needle and gently inflated to help restore the vertebra’s height. Once the space is created, the bone cement is injected to stabilize the fracture.

Kyphoplasty is commonly used to treat compression fractures caused by:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • Trauma

Kyphoplasty Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, you will meet with a member of our clinical team who will answer any questions you may have. You will also review and sign a consent form before we begin. In the procedure room, you will lie comfortably on a treatment table while the area of your back being treated is cleaned and prepared.

A radiology technician will assist your doctor by using a fluoroscope, or live X-ray, to guide the needle to the exact spot. A local anesthetic will be used to help keep you comfortable. Your doctor will insert a small needle into the fractured vertebra. In kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inserted and inflated to create space and restore the height of the bone. Then, medical-grade bone cement is carefully injected into the space to stabilize the fracture.

The procedure usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. Once it is complete, the needle is removed and a sterile bandage is placed over the site. You will then rest flat on your back in a recovery area while the cement continues to harden. Before you leave, we will provide you with detailed discharge instructions. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home.

Kyphoplasty Recovery

If you have any concerns during your recovery, we encourage you to call our office. Mild soreness or discomfort at the injection site can happen but usually goes away within a few days. Ice packs, rest, and over-the-counter pain medicines can help you feel more comfortable. Most people are able to return to their normal activities within a day after the procedure.

Why You Should Get Kyphoplasty

Some patients experience relief immediately after the procedure, while most feel significant improvement within 48 hours. Studies have shown that about 90 percent of patients experience complete or near-complete relief after kyphoplasty. In many cases, the results last from one month to more than ten years.
